We’re doing the Fight Game Media Awards a little differently this year. We’re breaking up the awards into multiple posts. Our boxing writers Carlos Toro and Robert Silva are the panel for boxing. They also host the Pound 4 Pound podcast on the Fight Game Media Network.
Here’s our first award of 2021:
Breakout Star of the Year
Carlos Toro: George Kambosos Jr.
Much in the same way Teofimo Lopez became a breakout star over his win against Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020, Kambosos became a star by beating Lopez earlier this year. The journey to the fight between Lopez and Kambosos was a roller coaster that spanned nearly an entire year that started with Triller’s now-worthless purse bid win in February. After many, many delays in getting the fight done, Matchroom Boxing and DAZN took the reins of the fight. Under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden (albeit at the Hulu Theater), Kambosos delivered an incredible and gutsy performance against Lopez, dropping the champion in the first round. What followed was a thrilling 12-round war that saw Kambosos win the championship rounds after being knocked down late in the fight to win by decision. The fight was exciting and Kambosos shined in what was easily a star-making win that will have many top lightweights gunning for the young Australian. His next fight is uncertain, but what is clear is that Kambosos became THE breakout star of 2020 in my opinion.
Robert Silva: Jaron Boots Ennis
With the next 18 months, I predict Boots Ennis will begin the next great era of 147-pound dominance. He has all the tools needed to become the next legend of the division that historically has been the greatest in terms of all-time great fighters.
