GGG’s Next Fight – Gennadiy Golovkin Vs Kamil Szeremeta Set For December 18

DAZN is closing out 2020 with two of boxingโs biggest stars fighting on the same weekend.
IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin will return to the ring and take on mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta. The fight will take place behind closed doors in Florida on December 18.

Golovkin will be making his first title defense since he defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko in October 2019. The 38-year-old Golovkin has won his last two fights after he suffered a majority decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in their rematch back in 2018.
Szeremeta has been Golovkinโs mandatory challenger for some time, sporting a 21-0 record as a pro with five victories inside the distance. Like Golovkin, Szeremeta has not been in action since October 2019, when he stopped Oscar Cortes in the second round on the undercard of Golovkinโs win over Derevyanchenko.ย
The fight between Golovkin and Szeremeta had been in the works throughout the year, with plans of having the fight staged months ago. However, the pandemic has delayed plans for Golovkinโs in-ring return.
Eagle-eyed followers of the sport will notice that the fight date is one day before Alvarez, who is fighting Callum Smith on DAZN in Texas.
The weekend pairing naturally gives some hope that a third fight between Alvarez and Golovkin can be made. However, it should be noted that Alvarez is currently exclusive to DAZN for this one fight against Smith. He is free to explore his options as far as where his next fight will land.ย
When Alvarez announced his fight against Smith, he also mentioned that he would be willing to move back down to middleweight for a third fight against Golovkin. However, Alvarez also noted that there will come a time, possibly soon, where he will have to say goodbye to the middleweight division for good.ย
Even with a future departure of Alvarez at middleweight, Golovkin is still a part of a loaded middleweight field. The likes of Jermall Charlo (WBC Champion) and Demetrius Andrade (WBO Champion), who also fights on DAZN, are still out there looking for more big fights.
Golovkinโs next fight is just the latest to be added to an increasingly loaded December for boxing on DAZN. Aside from Golovkin and Alvarezโs next fight, WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders will defend his title against Martin Murray on December 4 and unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will fight Kubrat Pulev on December 12.
