Duan takes us back to 1989. It’s Roberto Duran vs Iran Barkley in the fight of the year. #ThrowbackThursday
The 1989 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year sees an underdog Roberto Duran bidding to become world champion in his fourth weight class against WBC middleweight titlist Iran Barkley. The heavily favoured Blade, nine years Duran’s junior, is coming off his signature win; a three-round thrashing of Tommy Hearns, who himself had knocked out Duran in just two rounds four years prior.
This would be Roberto’s last success at the championship level and it would be the win that finally secured his long sought rubber match with his greatest rival. He would go on to fight another 27 times over the next 12 years, but this was perhaps the last time we saw glimpses of the great Roberto Duran.
GG’s note: Next week, the penultimate episode of the Fabulous Four Podcast will be released covering the third Sugar Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran fight, titled Uno Mas.
