Week Three MVP

Week three saw the guys looking a little beat up, but in a sense, because of that, their matches may have been paced better. They couldn’t go so hard from start to finish.

As far as contenders for the MVP of the week, I think there are three really strong ones. Evil had a crazy week, losing to Kenny Omega in a violent match, while also looking like he was knocked out during the match. And then the very next match, he beat Kazuchika Okada in a strong match, giving Okada his first loss of the tournament.

Tomohiro Ishii had an excellent battle against Yugi Nagata on night eleven. Poor Nagata looks like he’s hurting all over, but he’s been in just as many good matches as anyone. Ishii then had a fantastic match on night fifteen against Hiroshi Tanahashi. It featured some of the best selling I’ve ever seen in a match before.

Thus, I think that makes Tanahashi the MVP of the week. He not only had the great match with Ishii, but had an even better one on night eleven against Kota Ibushi. The match was electric as all hell and had some tremendous near falls.

Week Three Best Match

This one is easy. The aforementioned Tanahashi vs Ibushi match is the pick. Runner ups include Tanahashi vs Ishii, Ishii vs Nagata, Okada vs Evil, Ibushi vs Nagata and Juice Robinson beating Kenny Omega. Robinson beating Omega wasn’t as good as the others, but the finish came out of nowhere and it felt like a big deal.

Week Three Best Show

I know we’re going pretty A block heavy for week three. It’s well deserved. But, night fourteen, featuring the two major upsets with Evil beating Okada and Robinson beating Omega felt like a crazy and important night.

But the undercard for that show left a lot to be desired. Toru Yano had another eye rolling match with Tama Tonga. SANADA and Satoshi Kojima was a solid match, but SANADA’s lack of fire hurt it. And Michael Elgin’s match with Minoru Suzuki was disappointing, even though it was awesome to see Elgin get the duke.

But this has to go to night eleven. The show had two possible top ten matches of the tournament (with four shows still to go). We’ve already talked about them both. But man, Kota Ibushi is having some kind of tournament.

To end the tournament, we get Okada vs Suzuki (their match earlier in the year is my second favorite match of the year), Omega vs SANADA, Elgin vs Evil, Ishii vs Zack Sabre Jr., Tanahashi vs Tetsuya Naito, and of course, Okada vs Omega III, all before the finals. This is going to be a terrific closeout of the tournament.
