Two of the biggest stars in women’s boxing debut just one week apart.
Last Saturday, two-time Olympic champion Claressa Shields began her career as a pro. This week, she was joined in the paid ranks by one of the most celebrated female boxers of all-time as Katie Taylor too left the amateur code behind.
Taylor, as the face of women’s boxing for over a decade, and Shields, as its most promising young star, are two of the three biggest names in the sport right now. Completing that trio is Britain’s Nicola Adams, who herself may be in the process of making the jump.
As the three gold medal winners from the 2012 Olympics (when women’s boxing was first introduced), Adams, Taylor and Shields have played a major role in raising the profile of the amateur side of the sport. Their switch to the pros could be game changers.
