This week’s Throwback Thursday video is from SummerSlam 1988 as we continue SummerSlam week.
At WrestleMania IV, just five months before, Randy Savage won a tournament for the vacant WWE Heavyweight Championship, beating Ted DiBiase in the finals. Over the spring and summer, Savage defended the title with Hulk Hogan away filming No Holds Barred.
The first SummerSlam was booked in late August at Madison Square Garden. This became their fourth annual PPV after WrestleMania (1985), Survivor Series (1987), and Royal Rumble, which was originally a USA special that turned into a PPV earlier in 1988.
The main event featured Randy Savage and a mystery partner (worst kept secret in the world) against Andre The Giant and Ted DiBiase. The Mega Powers were reunited when Savage chose Hogan as his partner. It was the Mega Powers vs the Mega Bucks.
Actual marketing for the match was that Elizabeth was going to wear an itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikini. Hogan and Savage did interviews alluding to Elizabeth being their secret weapon.
Jesse “The Body” Ventura was the referee. The match was a little on the slow end, though it would fire up when Savage was in the ring. Both Savage and Hogan were outside the ring and Ventura was counting them out. Elizabeth jumped on the apron, though she was wearing a two-piece outfit. She took the lower piece off to display what looked like a one-piece bathing suit underneath. Not quite the bikini that was originally promised.
Savage hit the elbow drop and Hogan the leg drop and the match was over in favor of the good guys. It would kick off maybe Vince McMahon’s strongest angle in the Hogan era – when the Mega Powers finally exploded.
