In our latest Throwback Thursday video, we look back at the time that Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns fought on the same bill at the Astrodome.
On the latest Fabulous Four podcast, Duan and I talked about a dual-billed card that Leonard and Hearns fought on which preluded their first fight.
On June 25, 1981, Ray faced Ayub Kalule, who was defending his WBA light middleweight strap. Tommy defended his welterweight title against Pablo Baez. The dual build was to help promote their fight 2 1/2 months later.
Leonard moved up in weight and fights in a much different style than you’d usually see; stalking and trying to land one big shot rather than moving a lot and throwing lightning fast combinations. Hearns was simply two levels above Baez.
