Let’s remember back to when Tommy Hearns destroyed the undestroyable.
Earlier this week was the 31st anniversary to the day that the Hit Man crushed Roberto Duran. On June 15, 1984, after previous attempts to pair up Hearns with Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran gave up his WBA junior middleweight title to take on Hearns for his WBC junior middleweight title.
After losing to Sugar Ray Leonard in the fall of 1981, Hearns stayed active over the next year and few months before beating Wilfred Benitez, earning the WBC strap. But he did so at a price, breaking his devastating right hand in the 8th round of that fight. He only fought twice over the next year and change before facing Duran.
Duran beat Davey Moore for his WBA strap, only to lose his next fight to Marvin Hagler who was the holder of all the middleweight belts. The WBA wanted him to face Mike McCallum, but he chased Hearns instead, having to give up his belt in the process.
The fight isn’t much of one. Hearns’ right hand was back and it was back with a vengeance.
