May 7th brings with it mixed memories of the late Diego Corrales. Ten years ago today, he and Jose Luis Castillo put on one of the most unforgettable wars in the sport’s modern history. The bout itself will become timeless – the rare example of a fight that can match the punch-for-punch action of Gatti/Ward 1 and the split second turnaround drama of Chavez versus Taylor.
Just like Gatti and Ward had their legendary ninth round, and Chavez and Taylor had their controversial 12th, it’s round 10 for which Castillo and Corrales will forever be remembered. It’s a round so good that no matter how many times you re-watch it, it never loses its edge. It’s no less savage and no less surprising on tape than it was live. Down twice early in the session, only to battle back from the brink and finish the fight, it was to be Diego Corrales greatest in ring triumph. It was also however the last time he would leave the boxing ring a victor.
Corrales only fought three more times in his career but never recaptured the spark he had that night. He was first knocked out in rematch with Castillo later the same year. On that occasion, Castillo weighed in way in excess of the lightweight limit and the size difference told in the ring. A rubber match later scheduled between the pair never happened after the Mexican again missed weight; this time only by more. Corrales’ team did right by their fighter in advising him to withdraw from the bout. When Diego did eventually return to action, he dropped a split decision to the great Cuban Joel Casamayor. Then in his last bout on April 7th 2007, he lost another decision this time to Joshua Clottey. Exactly one month after the Clottey match up, and two years to the day since he beat Castillo on his career defining night, Diego “Chico” Corrales was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident.
