HBO might be going away with doing multi-part preview shows for their big upcoming boxing matches. I believe they’re only doing one episode for the Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri fight as well. In Pacquiao’s case, it might be because there’s nothing left to say, or maybe they can’t justify the cost based on the expected buy-rate number.

While this episode is really good, I could’ve used at the very least, a second episode. The 24/7 series was created during the build to the Floyd Mayweather vs Oscar De La Hoya fight and became the benchmark in how to promote fights. They were editing video together at the last minute, giving you the most up-to-date information possible.

I wouldn’t necessarily even call this episode 24/7. It’s much more of a countdown show shot and narrated like a 24/7 episode. For instance, they show Sergey Kovalov and his wife at the doctor’s office. She’s pregnant and going to give birth soon. However, she had the baby this past weekend and we’re still a few weeks away from the fight and we don’t see him with his child. That’s not very 24/7 HBO.

If you can get over the fact that this show goes against what the show was originally intended for, it’s a really good preview to the fight. Hopkins is half man, half alien and he plays that up here, going to the doctor’s office in an alien mask to take his pre-fight medicals. It also shows how dedicated he is to his diet and his training, which isn’t conventional boxing training, which helps him stay at a level most boxers only dream about and this man is 49 years old.

(If Hopkins were to figure out a way to win this fight, it would be one of the most tremendous things to happen in all of sports. But I don’t think it would be treated that way. This fight and his story is still under the radar.)

Kovalev comes across as very likable, but I’m not sure they get across how devastating he can be, or how scary this fight could be for Hopkins if things don’t go his way. Maybe that’s not the way to sell this fight anyway. But I was mesmerized by Hopkins and found myself wanting to know more about both guys, which a second episode would’ve given me.
