All Access: Mayweather vs Maidana 2

The first episode of Showtime’s All Access: Mayweather vs Maidana 2 is up.

I was talking to our boxing expert Duan about the new All Access and it’s clear that Showtime believes turning Mayweather up to 11 is the way to sell this fight. But in doing so, their strategy with Maidana might be to show him as a man dedicated to his sport as well as his family.

To me, the true star of the show, but only shown in bits and pieces, was Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia. Because Maidana’s not an English speaker, Garcia carried the load from a trash talk perspective. When Mayweather was being Mayweather at the media events, it was Garcia who was firing back at him. On two separate occasions, he joked about the gloves Team Mayweather made them wear handing Floyd some pink gloves and walking out with cartoonish oversized gloves. At another point, he made fun of the TMT bodyguards for just being muscular and not being able to fight.

There was talk about Maidana’s new strength and conditioning coach who is going to work more closely with Garcia since the previous one Alex Ariza wasn’t capable of working within the program. Garcia also told Maidana that they have a full camp this time since during the last one, Maidana’s fiance was giving birth to his child.

On Floyd’s end, he showed a little frustration with the media as to how they say he performed against Maidana the first time. In a sense, he was getting revenge on Maidana simply for being ahead after the first six rounds.

Duan made an interesting point. They showed Floyd open to doing yoga, but he didn’t seem to take it seriously. But he wasn’t very good at it.

Duan said, “One thing I found quite interesting is that Floyd looked very un-agile doing his yoga class. Usually when they show him doing anything that’s even remotely athletic, he does it more convincingly than anyone you have ever seen. This he looked very awkward and inflexible. I just thought that was a bit surprising.”

Is it a sign of waining athletic ability? Or because of his newness with yoga, is he simply stiff in the muscles he’s using doing yoga? I also found it surprising that he would do yoga as it’s sort of a new age type of thing (though I personally enjoy it) and boxing is so old school.
