On Wednesday, the Nevada State Athletic Commission granted Vitor Belfort a license to fight with some provisions.
He can’t fight until December. His first fight back must be in Las Vegas. And he would be tested extensively for the rest of his career on his dime (though I imagine the UFC may step up here to help with the costs). It’s also odd that the commission themselves can enforce drug testing, but won’t be the ones footing the bill.
The UFC immediately booked him and Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC 181, which is in December.
Belfort gave his reasons for failing his February 7th random test for testosterone. He begged and pleaded with the commission letting them know that he will abide by their ruling.
It’s hard to imagine that he’d be able to stay clean entirely if his body is simply not producing much testosterone and come December, if he looks like he’s looked while on TRT, the joke will be on the commission. However, with guys failing for EPO recently, it looks like the randomness of the drug tests are working, albeit in a small sample size. A clean Vitor is probably a Vitor who gets thrashed around by Weidman.
