UFC 176 is cancelled

The UFC has “postponed” UFC 176 after not being able to find a suitable main event for the show.

I don’t know how you can postpone a show if you never plan on redoing the show, but that’s how the UFC labeled it. What it really is, is a cancellation.

Last week, Ariel Helwani reported on UFC Tonight that Aldo had to pull out of his rematch with Chad Mendes because of an injury that happened in camp. It’s not a serious injury to the point that he’d have to miss a lot of time, but he wouldn’t be able to fight in August. The speculation is that they’ll reschedule the fight at a later date in Rio.

I was in Las Vegas last weekend for UFC 175 and there were rumblings all weekend that the show was going to be cancelled. One of the rumored options to save the show was to have Ronda Rousey fight in a quick turnaround (presumably against Cat Zingano) after UFC 175 if she got through the fight with Alexis Davis unscathed. She’d fought on short time before, facing Sara McMann in less than two months after beating Miesha Tate at UFC 168. She’s also said in the past that she’d be willing to fight on one-day’s notice. Now, that’s great for hype, but probably not reality.

But still, because of who she is, there was some thought that it could happen. I was talking to Jeff Hawkins at the fight (@Crapgame13) and we started wondering how much she would mean to that show from a monetary standpoint. With a terrible undercard, she did 340,000 buys with a Sara McMann who basically said that she wasn’t comfortable hyping the fight herself since Rousey does it so well. She also must not like to make money.

Realistically, while it would definitely outdraw Aldo/Mendes II, Rousey would be hard-pressed to do as many buys as she did with McMann with just one month of prep work. Also, it’s completely short-sided for the UFC to risk overworking their most valuable asset.

After her destruction of Davis, there was an awkward moment in the octagon. Joe Rogan asked her if she’d be willing to fight in less than a month.

Rousey’s answer was not to say yes, but not to say no. She has a knee issue that needs to be taken care of. She was put on the spot and Dana White seemed furious that she was. The interesting thing is that Rogan was supposedly fed the question by a producer and according to White, the producer overstepped his bounds. It was a terrible communication breakdown that made them look Mickey Mouse.

It’s now come out that Rousey’s injuries stem far beyond her knee issue. She received nine stitches on her hand after rupturing a cyst. And it just recently came out that she also broke her hand in the fight.

There’s a separate discussion to be had when it comes to why these issues are happening (canceling a PPV; awkward communication with Rogan/White/Rousey after a huge win), but I think it’s all related. There are way too many shows to do them all properly and I think we’re going to see more of these situations if they continue running their company on fumes.
