John LaRocca and I talked about this show during the week. It’s almost like a WEC reunion show, but without Anthony Pettis, it feels slightly less than that. But it is a Urijah Faber and Team Alpha Male homecoming.
Check out our play by play of UFC On Fox: Johnson vs. Benavidez 2:
1. Mac Danzig vs. Joe Lauzon
Danzig is wearing shorts that say, “Not for sale,” on the back. I wonder if they should’ve said, “No one wanted to sponsor me.” I’m kidding by the way. Lauzon had an early arm bar attempt, but Danzig fought through it and ended up on top. Back on the feet, Danzig was solid with his striking, using body shots and elbows. Lauzon seems stronger. Lauzon got a trip for his second takedown. Lauzon wasn’t necessarily impressive, but it’s his round.
Danzig was winning a slap boxing fight for the first half of the round, but Lauzon took him down and pounded him with elbows opening him up. It’s two rounds to zero for Lauzon.
This round followed the same pattern as the last. They were on their feet until Lauzon determined he wanted the fight on the ground. And then he started pounding him with elbows again from side control.
Winner: Joe Lauzon by way of unanimous decision
2. Nik Lentz vs. Chad Mendes
Mendes landed a big right hand and Lentz was on the defense. He took Lentz down. Lentz is already bleeding from his mouth and nose. He followed it up with two takedowns. He looks much quicker and stronger than Lentz.
This one is going completely Mendes’ way. He’s the better wrestler, throws the harder punches, and is just the better fighter. Lentz is doing a good job hanging in there.
Lentz had a really good round right until the end when he was taken down and put in a guillotine. He also took a helluva right hand when he got up. It’s possible Lentz won the third.
Winner: Chad Mendes by unanimous decision
It looks like one judge gave Lentz the third.
3. Michael McDonald vs. Urijah Faber
McDonald missed a kick and Faber immediately took him down. He stayed on top, but didn’t do much. He strategically landed leg kicks and body shots to take the round.
Faber cracked him with a right hand that got McDonald’s attention. McDonald landed one as well. Faber threw a nice short left hook. McDonald just missed a head kick and Faber followed up with a nasty right hand. McDonald got on his unicycle and Faber nailed him with another big right and McDonald flew against the cage. Faber put the guillotine on and McDonald tapped out.
Winner: Urijah Faber by 2nd round submission
4. Joseph Benavidez vs. Demetrious Johnson
Well, that was fast. Johnson threw a crushing right hook and dropped Benavidez. He followed up with two unnecessary punches on top and it’s over.
Winner: Demetrious Johnson by way of 1st round TKO
