The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey Vs. Team Tate – Episode 1 Recap

TUF Episode 1 recap

Is it TUF season again already? I will do my best blogging the draft episode as this show moves pretty fast. I’m pretty excited both to see Ronda and Miesha, but also because it will be a cool dynamic to see men and women in the same house.

Let’s get started with the TUF episode 1 recap.

Ronda comes into the gym and Miesha joins her. Ronda doesn’t understand why Miesha is on the show. Miesha won’t tell her why and tells her to talk to Dana and Ronda immediately starts to get frustrated. Dana tells them both that Cat Zingano hurt herself and was in surgery and Ronda exclaimed relief. She thought she was losing her spot or something.

1. Jessamyn Duke vs. Laura Howarth

Duke and Howarth both rolled around on the ground, but Duke sunk in a triangle to submit her late in the first round. She has long legs and tapped her out.

Winner: Duke via submission

2. Danny Martinez vs. David Grant

Grant hit Martinez with an illegal elbow. Grant seemed to get comfortable with the distance quickly and Martinez was lunging a lot.

On the ground, Grant threw a knee while Martinez was on all fours. A point was taken away which evened the fight. Didn’t matter as Grant got an arm bar for the win.

Winner: Grant via submission

3. Revelina Berto vs. Jessica Rakoczy

This was only in highlight form. Rakoczy got out of a few submissions before shoulder locking her.

Winner: Rakoczy via submission

4. Michael Wooten vs. Emil Hartsner

This was also in clip form. Dana said that it sucked.

Winner: Michael Wooten via decision

5. Peggy Morgan vs. Bethany Marshall

Morgan stopped her quite easily with punches. Morgan is the biggest 135’er according to Miesha.

Winner: Peggy Morgan

6. Valerie Letourneau vs. Roxanne Modafferi

Modafferi got her back and choked her out, which was a bit of a surprise considering she said she was on a five fight losing stream.

Winner: Modafferi via submission

7. Tim Gorman vs. Lee Sandmeier

Sandmeier is hearing impaired.

Gorman took him down immediately, got his back, sunk his hooks, flattened Sandmeier out and started railing down on him. Sandmeier turned over and took more of a beating with Gorman mounting him. Sandmeier turned on his stomach and it was stopped.

Winner: Gorman via submission

8. Tonya Evinger vs. Raquel Pennington

Pennington is a boxer, yet choked out Evinger who is actually one of the women I’d heard of before.

Winner: Pennington via submission

9. Chris Beal vs. Sirwan Kakai

They only showed clips of this one, but Beal looked excellent with his striking. He had trouble on the ground though.

Winner: Beal by decision

10. Josh Hill vs. Patrick Holohan

More clips, which seemed to be a good idea. Hill just kept taking Holohan down.

Winner: Hill by decision

11. Colleen Schneider vs. Shayna Baszler

Baszler is actually someone I’ve seen before. Not sure why Baszler is even in this tournament. She should already be on the roster. It took a little while, but she strong-womaned Schneider to the ground and just had her way with her. Schneider squirmed out but went down again. Baszler sunk the arm bar in and finished her.

Winner: Baszler via submission

12. Louis Fisette vs. Chris Holdsworth

Fisette was cocky and admitted to not training all that hard. He also lives with his dad and doesn’t pay rent. Holdsworth trains with Team Alpha Male. Fisette was tough fighting off submissions, but he eventually tapped to an arm triangle. Fisette is probably better than some of the winners even though he lost.

Winner: Holdsworth via submission

13. Julianna Pena vs. Gina Mazany

This was in highlights, but Pena looked like a beast. She seemed to just beat on her for two rounds.

Winner: Pena via decision

14. Matt Munsey vs. Anthony Gutierrez

Seemed like Gutierrez had the upper hand for most of it, but couldn’t finish Munsey.

Winner: Gutierrez via decision

15. Tara LaRosa vs. Sarah Moras

Moras was immediately cracked in the face, but took LaRosa down and had her in some submissions and won the decision.

Winner: Moras via decision

16. Rafael De Freitas vs. Cody Bollinger

Bollinger was ferocious, but kept sticking his head into submissions; first a triangle and then a guillotine. He tried powering through them.

In the second, he tee’d off on De Freitas who just stood there tired with his back against the cage. Bollinger finished him.

Winner: Bollinger via TKO

Ronda wins the coin flip but she wants first fight so Miesha gets the first pick.

Here’s how the selections went:

Miesha: Julianna Pena
Ronda: Shayna Baszler
Miesha: Sarah Moras
Ronda: Jessamyn Duke
Miesha: Raquel Pennington
Ronda: Peggy Morgan
Miesha: Roxanne Modafferi
Ronda: Jessica Rakoczy

Miesha: Cody Bollinger
Ronda: Chris Beal
Miesha: Chris Holdsworth
Ronda: David Grant
Miesha: Josh Hill
Ronda: Anthony Gutierrez
Miesha: Tim Gorman
Ronda: Michael Wooten

Dana makes Ronda choose the first fight immediately and she chooses the battle of the first round picks. It’s Shayna Baszler vs. Julianna Pena, which screws with Miesha’s game plan as Miesha figured she’d be able to work with Pena. Nope, she goes in against the big dog.
