HBO Boxing – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Vs. Sergio Martinez Play By Play

Duan has Martinez winning by a 9th round stoppage. I say 11th round. But I think we’re both hoping for a strong showing for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. tonight. There’s word that Chavez Jr. could go up to super middle weight after this fight.

There’s a big fight feel tonight, which I’ve never felt for a Martinez or Chavez Jr. fight. Couldn’t really tell how much bigger Chavez Jr. looked at the stare down based on the camera.

R1
Easy round for Martinez. And not because he did much. More so because Chavez Jr. didn’t do anything. Chavez backed up for nearly the entire round.

R2
Lots of taunting by both guys. Martinez fought a lot of the round with his hands down, trying to entice Chavez Jr. to trade. When hit, Chavez Jr. acted like Martinez couldn’t hurt him. Chavez finally opened up a bit, but not enough. Martinez’s round again.

R3
Chavez Jr. is digging the body when he gets his chance. He’s just not able to really trap Martinez. It’s like Balboa/Creed. Okay, it’s not that bad. But really, Chavez Jr. can’t even get off.

R4
Chavez looked okay, but Martinez is too fast and too precise with his shots. At the end of the round, Martinez throw a left with his hand at his side the rocked Chavez against the ropes.

R5
According to CompuBox, Martinez has outlanded Chavez Jr. 118-49, and it seems like more. Martinez has his cadence and pattern of punches down. Chavez needs to amp up the pressure to try to throw off Martinez’s timing.

Good round for Chavez, but I’m not sure he did enough. He finally had Martinez up against the ropes and looked to land good shots, but then Martinez threw about 8-10 uncontested shots. Closer round, but Martinez is still pitching a shutout.

They had a fantastic back and forth in the corner to end the round. Both landed well, but the hand speed was evident. Chavez Jr. didn’t build upon the last round. Took way too many shots. But ended okay.

R8
Chavez has been bleeding from his mouth and nose all night, but now Martinez now has a small cut. Not sure where it came from. Very workmanlike round for Martinez. Just outworked Chavez all round long.

R9
Martinez was on his horse all round long, moving around, being nearly unhittable. Would like to see him pick up the power shots to maybe put more pressure on Chavez, but after being up 9-0, not too necessary.

R10
It really is showtime for Maravilla now. He looks just as quick now in round 10, as he did in round 1. Pretty amazing performance here. Roach is trying to stress to Jr. that he needs a KO and that he needs to let his hands go. He didn’t seem that interested.

R11
That was my favorite round of the fight. Chavez Jr. found his range and landed some big punches, but then he took a breath and a few seconds later, he was getting battered with multiple shots. On two occasions, Martinez rallied back after good shots for Chavez with amazing hand speed and precision.

R12
What an amazing finish to the fight. Chavez Jr. finally caught him with multiple power shots in a row and Martinez went down. Rather than hold on and move, Martinez traded with him and it looked like Chavez Jr. could catch him, but it didn’t happen. Chavez Jr. needed one more round. In the only round I had him winning, he nearly ended it.

Winner: Sergio Martinez by unanimous decision
