UFC 146 – Frank Mir Vs. Junior Dos Santos Play By Play
I’ve been pretty down on this show overall ever since Alistair Overeem failed his drug test and was pulled out of the fight. I was even thinking about skipping the show, but there’s one reason why I decided that I had to watch it — Junior Dos Santos. Dos Santos is a special fighter and he’s a fighter who I want to see as much of as possible.
The prelims featured two pretty big upsets. Jamie Varner defeated Edson Barboza by knockout in the first round. He landed a ferocious right hand that eventually led to the stoppage. Also, Diego Brandao looked well on his way to beating Darren Elkins after a strong first round, but ran out of gas and lost the next two rounds.
Mike Brown retired after his win. No word on whether or not Mayhem Miller retires after his loss to CB Dolloway in a terribly boring fight.
1. Lavar Johnson vs. Stefan Struve
Johnson came out swinging and landed a huge uppercut. They were up against the cage and Struve pulled guard and submitted Johnson with an arm bar.
Winner: Stefan Struve by way of 1st round submission
2. Shane Del Rosario vs. Stipe Miocic
Miocic looks like Mirko Cro Cop’s annoying little brother. This is a real heavyweight fight here. Miocic was on point with his strikes early, but Del Rosario started to unload with big kicks. Close round, but probably Del Rosario
Miocic got a takedown and nailed Del Rosario on the ground. We had a weird camera angle so I’m not sure how clearly it landed. Miocic has busted him open and his nailing him with elbows and punches from the top position in the half guard. These shots were landing hard and it’s stopped.
Winner: Stipe Miocic by way of 2nd round TKO
Del Rosario got up and tried to walk and nearly fell over.
3. Dave Herman vs. Roy Nelson
Hot damn. Overhand right by Nelson drops Herman and that’s all she wrote.
Winner: Roy Nelson by way of 1st round TKO
4. Antonio Silva vs. Cain Velasquez
Velasquez caught a kick and immediately took Silva down. He cut him with an elbow and Silva is bleeding like a stuck pig. Left hands finished Silva. He could only cover up.
Winner: Cain Velasquez by way of 1st round TKO
5. Frank Mir vs. Junior Dos Santos
There wasn’t a ton of action until the last 15 seconds or so. Dos Santos rocked him and nearly put him out. Mir grabbed his leg as if it was a way to save his life. Insane hand speed of Dos Santos trying to finish Mir.
That was pretty damn easy work. Dos Santos’ hand speed was way too fast for Mir’s reflexes. Mir couldn’t see some of the punches coming. He was even falling awkwardly from shots. Absolutely in different classes. Mir needs to stay away from guys who can box. Fight was stopped after a big right and Mir just didn’t know where he was.
