WWE SummerSlam 2011 – John Cena Vs. CM Punk Play By Play
The key to this show is how well they book the Undisputed WWE title match. It really doesn’t matter who comes away with the belt, but more so, how they continue the storyline. We have a poll on our Fight Game Blog Facebook page on who comes away with the championship.
There’s not much else to this show, except for Christian and Randy Orton fighting for the other belt. It looks like they’ll have to come up with some matches on the fly.
The show starts, not with a match, but with a promo. The Miz, R-Truth and Alberto Del Rio all come out to cut promos. We could see a six-man tag here. Yep, on the other side is Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, and Rey Mysterio.
1. The Miz, R-Truth, and Alberto Del Rio vs. Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, and Rey Mysterio
What a fun opener. Miz was getting over on everyone early until Rey was tagged in. Then all six guys got involved. Mysterio tried to set up the double 619 on Truth and Miz. Miz moved, but Kofi dove off the top rope to the outside on him. He got legit high in the air. Morrison took out Del Rio with a dive outside as well. Mysterio hit the splash off the top on Truth for the win.
Winner: Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, and Rey Mysterio
Punk had to apologize to John Laurinaitis and did so mockingly. Then Stephanie McMahon came out and nearly scared me. She tried to wish Punk luck and offered to shake his hand. He said he knew where that hand had been.
2. Mark Henry vs. Sheamus
Henry went over big, even though he didn’t win by pinfall. He dominated nearly the entire match and then picked Sheamus up and rammed him through the barricade for the count-out victory. Sheamus hit the brogue kick to put Henry out of the ring, but it was mostly Henry here.
Winner: Mark Henry
Cee-Lo came out with a handful of the divas dancing. Cee-Lo is wearing a shiny dress and looks absolutely ridiculous. He looks like Miss Elliot from her Supa Dupa Fly video.
3. Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix
Not a bad match at all and quite the surprise. The story was that Beth was eventually going to win the match and Kelly was just fighting to keep the belt from Beth. Kelly “hulked up” by screaming, but Beth caught her after she tried the back handspring elbow and put her in the Glam Slam, but Kelly Kelly rolled her up for the win.
Winner: Kelly Kelly
Truth did an interview and Jimmy Hart told him he needed him as a manager and Truth accused him of being Lil’ Jimmy. Ron Artest was backstage as well.
4. Wade Barrett vs. Daniel Bryan
That was a ROH WWE style match, in that Bryan did as many of realistic striking and submission holds as possible, but still in a WWE style. He actually dominated a lot of the match. Barrett went for the Wasteland and Bryan turned it into a guillotine and immediately transitioned into the LaBelle Lock. Barrett grabbed the rope to break it up. Bryan took him to the corner and unleashed more kicks on him and they both went to the top. Barrett pushed him off Bryan crotched himself on the rope. Barrett came off the top with a clothesline and then Wasteland for the win.
Winner: Wade Barrett
Bryan has to be the best guy going today in the company.
5. Christian vs. Randy Orton
Christian introduced his best friend Edge who came out to a big cheer. Christian was very happy that Edge was with him. Edge dressed him down for whining. Now Christian has to wrestle a match with a broken heart.
They wrestled the beginning of the match in the ring. Then Christian took his belt into the crowd and Orton chased him. When they came back, Christian had a kendo stick and abused Orton with it. Orton didn’t even ask for another shot. Orton drop kicked him when Christian came off the top for a stick shot. Christian went for the Unprettier, but didn’t get it. Orton tried to punt him, but Christian moved out of the way.
Orton superplexed Christian onto a table that wasn’t set up. Not sure what that was for. Christian set up the spear onto the table but Orton leap frogged him and Christian threw him outside. Orton threw Christian into the steps and Christian took the steps like Foley, if Foley could jump. They made their way to the announcer’s table and Christian went for the RKO on the table, but Orton reversed it, yet Orton seems more the worse for ware. Back in the ring, Christian quickly hit the Unprettier, but Orton kicked out. Christian set up the one man conchairto and spit on him, but missed it. Orton got the chair blasted Christian and sent him outside the ring and into the table.
Orton short powerslammed Christian through the table. Both of these guys are going to need light work this week. He then set up the DDT onto the garbage can. The finish looked painful. Christian cracked Orton with the kendo stick and went to the second rope to spring board onto Orton, but Orton hit the RKO onto the steps. Orton is the champ, yawn, yet again.
Winner: Randy Orton
The match was a bit long and overbooked, but still good stuff. It just didn’t hit as well as it could’ve.
6. CM Punk vs. John Cena
They started out working a slow match. It’s quite the different match from Orton/Christian. Punk busted out an Earthquake splash. Punk is countering many of Cena’s 5 moves of doom. He transitioned Cena’s STFU into a modified triangle, but Cena turned it back into the STFU. Punk transitioned into the Anaconda Vice and Cena was back to the STFU.
Cena was out of the ring and Punk dove out on top of him but they both crashed into the barricade. Rather than just count slowly, HHH decided to go out side and grab them and throw them back into the ring. Cena hit the 5 Knuckle Shuffle and went for the FU, but Punk got out of it. Cena hit a big splash in the corner and a side slam for a two count. Punk hit a bulldog off the second rope for a two count. Punk tried a spring board from the outside, but Cena turned it into the STFU. Punk got to the ropes. Cena hit the FU, but Punk kicked out. Cena missed the leg drop from the top, which looked like it had to hurt. Then Punk hit the GTS for a two count.
Punk went to the top and did the Randy Savage elbow and nearly killed Cena for the two count. Punk hit the GTS to the ribs and went for the cover. Cena had his foot on the ropes the entire time. HHH stil counted to three. Punk wins.
Winner: CM Punk
Kevin Nash showed up and power bombed CM Punk. Alberto Del Rio came out with is brief case, kicked him in the head, and won the WWE Title.
