UFC Fight Night Play By Play – Phil Davis Vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

It was originally supposed to be Tito Ortiz vs. Lil’ Nog, and that fight helped sell out the show. But like he does from time to time, Ortiz had to pull out of the fight and it all of a sudden became a much harder fight for Lil’ Nog. Phil Davis and Jon Jones were pegged early on as the next big things. Jones has succeeded. It’s Davis’ turn.

Anthony Johnson hasn’t fought in what seems like forever and he faces Dan Hardy who is on a bit of a losing streak. I don’t think either guy gets cut with a loss, but it still doesn’t look good. And who doesn’t want to see Garcia/Korean Zombie 2? Should be a fun night of fights.

1. Chan Sung Jung vs. Leonard Garcia

Neither guy looks to be that interested in getting into the same war they were in last time. Garcia is swinging wildly, but catching himself. But he’s also fighting pretty smartly compared to the last fight. Zombie is throwing a high leg kick. Garcia swung hard on a combination that landed but Zombie took him down. Zombie went for an arm bar from the north/south position, but Garcia got out of it. Zombie pushed Garcia up against the cage and kneed him on his side and Garcia went down. The Zombie is about to steal this round. Garcia won the first half, but Zombie owned him in the second.

They started to get after it. Garcia was trying very hard to stick and move, but after Zombie landed a flying knee, Garcia stopped being patient and threw a kick, but he was tripped. Zombie got on top of him and was laying into him with the ground and pound. He put a figure four on Garcia’s inside leg and did what Joe Rogan called a twister. Zombie grabbed Garcia around his chin and twisted is body and Garcia tapped.

Winner: Chan Sung Jung by way of 2nd round submission

After watching Jung get TKOd recently, I thought his style meant that he’d be done. But nope, he looked really good here.

2. DaMarques Johnson vs. Amir Sadollah

Before the fight, Amir said that if Johnson takes him down ten times, he’ll get up eleven times. We might be on our way there. Sadollah wants to stand up, but Johnson is taking the openings he gives him and taking him down. Johnson has sleepy stand-up. He’s trying to lull Amir to sleep right before he fires. Sadollah landed a front kick to the chest and Johnson went down, but got right back up. They were up against the cage and Johnson threw him over his shoulder. But Amir got up and delivered a takedown of his own.

We had a Zombie/Garcia trade against the cage with Sadollah nailing Johnson with about five great shots in a row. Sadollah just kept hammering him. He got him on the ground and nearly pounded him out. Johnson got back up to a knee and Sadollah kneed him in the side. Then Amir used Johnson’s arm and trapped it so he only had one arm to defend himself, and he pounded him with punches and elbows and it was stopped.

Winner: Amir Sadollah by way of 2nd round TKO

3. Anthony Johnson vs. Dan Hardy

A minute in, Johnson dropped Hardy with a head kick. Hardy got up and Johnson grabbed a leg and forced Hardy back down and into his guard. Johnson just used his immense size to keep Hardy down, moving into Hardy’s half guard. Hardy tried for a kimura but didn’t get it.

Johnson got another takedown. If Hardy can get an advantage, this is where Johnson’s big weight cut can hurt him. But if Hardy lets him just stay on top of him, he’s going to lose this fight. Hardy went for another kimura. They were finally stood up and Johnson grabbed him and pushed him up against the cage again. Hardy needs to stop him from muscling him around if he is going to have a chance to win this fight.

Johnson took him down again. Hardy just looks like a defeated fighter. Johnson has taken his will. Johnson got his back and was working for the rear naked choke. He didn’t get it, but went for an arm triangle, transitioned into a neck crank, and then just decided to sit him in a headlock and throw punches.

Winner: Anthony Johnson by way of unanimous decision

The scores were all 30-27.

4. Phil Davis vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Davis starts off aggressive with head kicks. He tried to come in and Lil’ Nog blasted him with a right hand. Then he immediately went for a takedown. He didn’t like getting hit in the face. Lil’ Nog stuffed it. Nog may win this round with the slightly better stand-up and his takedown defense. Davis shot in again and Nog lost his balance and fell, but before Davis could jump on him, he was up. When Davis kicks, Nog throws a short left hand that has been connecting.

Davis simply doesn’t want to punch with Nog, but he keeps paying for it when he kicks. Nog is landing with his left hand. Davis looks apprehensive. He stuffed on takedown, but Davis finally got one with about 2 minutes left. Nog kicked him off after good defense on the ground, but Davis was all over him and powered him back to the round. He needs this round and may get it. He’s using ground and pound on Nog, who is turtling a bit. He ended the round with knees to Nog. I think Davis took the round.

Davis may have simply tired Nog out. He gets a single-leg takedown and is just outworking Nog on the ground now. He set up Nog again with another takedown by throwing kicks. While Davis is nowhere near the technician that Nog is, the difference in athletic ability is wide and that’s the difference.

Winner: Phil Davis by way of unanimous decision

I would’ve scored it 29-28, but it doesn’t matter. 1. Garcia looks, to me anyway, like a fighter being trained into a style he’s just not capable of fighting. ‘They had him up on his toes, trying to use distance, counter etc. He doesn’t have the rhythm or reflexes to fight that way. He can’t generate power from that stance. I think he needs to revert back to what comes naturally to him. He’s stuck in two minds and it just doesn’t work for him.

Phil Davis is never going to be the next big thing. He has no flare about him it all. He is one of the most boring by the numbers guys that UFC have. He can be very successful I’m sure, but he’s not going to be a ticket seller.

  2. I wonder if he was caught off guard a bit by the Zombie? It seemed like he wanted to go all out and when the Zombie didn’t, he then tried to fight a more technical style, which he did not seem very good at.

I agree with you about Davis today. I think he can get over if he power wrestles and has some amazing slams and takedowns. He’s not that guy yet and he seemed a little apprehensive last night, which I don’t fault him for because Nog was definitely a step up in competition for him.
