While the Rock’s latest performance was quite awesome, I was left more so scratching my head at exactly what they’re building to. Last night on Rock’s Facebook page, he posted a photo of a boot stomping on a John Cena hat, which whet the appetite at the possibility of him coming on Raw to answer John Cena.
Cena and The Miz cut a terrible promo together with Cena’s stuff seemingly taken from the Brian Gerwitz comedy hour that did more harm than good in building up their WrestleMania main event match. Cena made Miz look like a small child, someone who isn’t worthy of holding the title and is more jabroni than main-eventer. I fail to understand how that type of booking makes anyone want to see a match. This is worse than how WrestleMania X-8 Chris Jericho was booked.
And if Cena made The Miz look like a small child, the Rock made Cena look like a bug underneath his shoe, or maybe a Cena hat underneath his shoe. The Rock massacred Cena, but did it in a way where all he was really doing was sticking up for himself, using Cena’s own material against him. It was brilliantly done, but at the end, I felt like two things were for sure. One, that Cena isn’t on Rock’s level. And two, they’re building up a match that’s not taking place, better than the match that is taking place.
Check it out for yourself:
If we are to believe that there is only going to be a confrontation at WrestleMania, with nothing else in the hopper, it will be a disappointment. What it does show is that Vince McMahon is very worried about the buyrate and he’s going all in on making sure this WrestleMania isn’t disappointing like last year. But at what expense? If they’re not building to future business then their current champion looks like a goof, the guy who will probably take the title looks like a Rock wannabe, and the guy who looks like the biggest star ever in professional wrestling will soon be doing media for another Fast And Furious movie.
To further show how they are sacrificing future business for this one buyrate, take a look at the opening promo by Triple H. He basically said that he and the Undertaker have zero challenges left, none of the guys on the show can cup their balls in one hand, and if not for each other, they wouldn’t even need to wrestle. And after saying all that, he then beat up Sheamus and left him for dead. In fifteen minutes, HHH left the entire locker room in a pile of dead bodies.
And next week, we have Stone Cold Steve Austin coming back to the show which will definitely mean another strong rating, but yet another reason why future business isn’t really what Vince McMahon has in mind. Will Austin be some sort of referee at WrestleMania like he’s been in the past? And if so, he’ll probably end up hitting the stunner on someone who will have to wrestle on the next show.
From an entertainment prospect, I have no issues with any of this. The WrestleMania show will be much better because of Rock, HHH, Taker, and Austin. They are more entertaining than everyone else on the current roster. There are only a couple of guys on each brand who can even compare to them. Maybe CM Punk can get close. Cena should be close if they ever took the Gerwitz shackles off him. But again, when this show is over and Rock, Austin, Taker, and probably even HHH aren’t on the next show, WWE will seem cold immediately. Whatever buzz they get from this show will be over the very next Raw when they have to move on.
The only thing that was even remotely newsworthy on Smackdown was the Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes feud, which was jump started thanks to a sly promo by Dusty Rhodes. I liked it because Dusty got in, got out, and let his son shine and it was the best Cody looked in maybe forever. While you can’t go that route all the time, Cody looked like a legit pissed off guy who truly hated Rey. I would imagine that Rey shows some of that back on the next Smackdown.
Here’s the current WrestleMania 27 lineup as we know it:
Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio
The Miz vs. John Cena
The Undertaker vs. Triple H
Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole (with Jack Swagger)
Randy Orton vs. CM Punk

I just have to say I agree with everything you said. I just have to also point out that you mentioned that the point of interest on Smackdown was Rey vs Rhodes. Not Del Rio vs. Edge which somehow should be bigger. I just don’t know how.
At least on Friday, they’ll do the contract signing. But that’s the problem with the 6 week build and knowing who the contenders are.
They have no real build for the title matches.
