Anderson Silva Could Be Out Until Next Year

According to a Fighter’s Magazine story, Anderson Silva has a cracked rib and could be out until next year.

The story quotes Ramon Lemos, his jiu-jitsu coach as saying that March 2011 could be a target date.

After the first round he said he broke his ribs. He said told me he could not breath because of the rib. I told him to forget the rib and work the movement of legs and he would get the triangle… After the fight he went to the hospital and did an x-ray and the doctor said he did not break it, it was just a crack.

During the interview with Joe Rogan after his win against Chael Sonnen, Silva mentioned the rib injury and at the post-fight press conference, it was talked about again.

If true, it would postpone a possible huge rematch between the two fighters until sometime next year, which realistically may have already been the case. One would expect that Chael Sonnen will fight again before Silva is ready, possibly against a contender like Vitor Belfort, which could put the rematch in jeopardy if he were to lose. There are other fighters out there like Yushin, Okami, Chris Leben and Wanderlei Silva who could be pitted against him too.

If Silva is indeed out until at least spring of next year, it might be wise to make he and Sonnen both coaches of the next season of The Ultimate Fighter to truly push the promotion of the fight to the next level.

Obviously, we haven’t heard from the UFC or even Silva himself about the extent of the injury, which I imagine will happen sometime soon.
