FGB Radio – Pacquiao/Clottey Aftermath and WWE/TNA Not So Wars Talk

Big D and I did a show very early Monday morning talking about the aftermath of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight. I rant about the issues I had with the fight and we discuss Pacquiao/Mayweather and why I think it’s not happening.

We then get into some wrestling talk as it’s week two of the new Monday Night (not so) Wars. TNA is in some deep trouble tonight.

What Did Test-O-Phobic Pacquiao Prove by Beating Joshua Clottey?

    By Elisa Harrison

Monday morning has rolled around, and the time has come to jot down my comments and feelings regarding the latest shameful chapter in the sport of boxing, known to some as a high profile match-up between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey.

Filipino fans will hate this article, others may too, and that’s perfectly fine…. I understand what it’s like to be fanatical about a particular athlete or an actor, a politician, etc., so I can see how the passion for Manny Pacquiao gets in the way of the reality of it all. However, to me it’s not about being a boxer’s fan, it’s about being a fan of boxing.

It remains a puzzle to me how a man can walk away from at least 40 million dollars because of a certain style blood test. We have read and/or heard many excuses from this boxer’s camp and to me, they’ve all been exactly that, excuses, and bad ones at that.

A man who sports tats is NOT afraid of needles. A fighter who is clean does NOT fear testing, be it the Olympic style testing or whichever type of testing is mandatory according to a particular boxing commission’s rules. A proud man does NOT walk away

from an opponent who supposedly -according to his fans and camp- would lose to him if their fight was ever made. It just does NOT make sense, and like judge Judy often says, “if it doesn’t make sense, it simply isn’t true.” A smart woman that judge Judy, somewhat overbearing but definitely wise and smart….

As if all of the above wasn’t bad enough, when struck by the attack of test-o-phobia that kept Pacquiao from meeting Floyd Mayweather, Jr., the man who has beaten all the men who have stood in front of him, Manny Pacquiao picks Joshua Clottey

as his opponent. I am willing to bet that there is still a rank odor at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The choice couldn’t have been more comfortable for Pacquiao, after all Clottey is slow as molasses and not a fighter at the top echelon of the sport. He may be a good B fighter, but he is not now, nor has he ever been an A guy. It’s as simple as that.

So, what did Pacquiao prove by beating Clottey? In my humble opinion, he didn’t prove anything of a positive nature. The night went according to script. Clottey wasn’t really worthy of this opportunity, and perhaps should be paid according to the effort

he put forth. This was NOT the fight that the boxing world wanted to see, nor the fight that could have resolved who is who, and what is what in the sport of boxing. Who, as in who is the P4P ruler, and what, as in what would the Olympic style testing would have revealed about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

I want to give Floyd Jr. some props. I believe he has set the bar at a level no one else in the sport has even thought of doing, and this is definitely a good thing. Every other major sport has stringent testing; stiff penalties and fines when rules are

violated; capable and honorable officials, (for the most part), and even when rotten apples find their way into the pot, they usually get caught and are dealt with in the appropriate manner. Boxing doesn’t seem willing or capable of cleaning its own house, to separate the honest men from the crooks, to deliver a clean product to its fans. Long live MMA some may say!

I wonder what baseball fans would say if whenever the NY Yankees played, the American League was to appoint George Steinbrenner’s son as chief umpire at home plate? It’s called nepotism and it would never happen. However, similar scenarios happen in our sport. We have a high profile case of

nepotism in the state of Texas, where Lawrence Cole Sr. is in charge of the Commission and Cole Jr. referees most of the Commission’s high profile fights. It is bad enough that nepotism seems acceptable to those in charge of the game, but to add insult to injury, Cole Jr. is one of the worst referees in the business. How can this be considered up to standard? Why is it accepted?

Last but not least, I would like to express respect for Shane Mosley, who at some point in his career used steroids, (reference Balco Lab scandal), but had no trouble accepting Mayweather’s request for the most serious drug testing available. Win or lose, Mosley is already a winner in my book.

I chuckle at the thought that perhaps -and this would be fabulous- ten or twenty years down the road, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will not be remembered for his flashiness, his superior boxing skills or the difficult family issues he has been a

part of throughout most of his career. It just may be that “Money” Mayweather’s legacy will be forcing the sport of boxing to take a closer look at -and act upon- cheaters and cowards. Yes, cowards, that’s what I said. Any athlete who has to use illegal substances to have an edge on the opposition, can’t be considered anything short of a cheat and/or a coward.

It is my closing thought that on the main event of a card scheduled for Saturday, May 1st, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, there won’t be a loser, regardless of whose arm is raised at the end of the bout.

*Oh, by the way you forgot something, it’s Pacquiao’s fault that he was even in the ring with Clottey instead of Floyd Jr. Common Sense people.

I see one of Two things happening now,(a) Floyd Jr. beating Mosley and fighting the winner of Cotto/Foreman or (b), Manny and long neck Freddie =D realize that Cotto will be stealing their glory and begin to get off the stuff to fight Floyd A.K.A. MONEY for the money cause that’s all they’re winning in that fight.

  2. This statement was idiotic – “I want to give Floyd Jr. some props. I believe he has set the bar at a level no one else in the sport has even thought of doing, and this is definitely a good thing. Every other major sport has stringent testing; stiff penalties and fines when rules are violated; capable and honorable officials, (for the most part), and even when rotten apples find their way into the pot, they usually get caught and are dealt with in the appropriate manner. Boxing doesn’t seem willing or capable of cleaning its own house, to separate the honest men from the crooks, to deliver a clean product to its fans. Long live MMA some may say!”

MMA and boxing are tested exactly the same. They are tested by the commission. No MMA fighter has come out and asked for more stringent drug testing.

  3. I can’t get to that article for whatever reason. But I’d imagine he’d say that. They said the same thing after his fight with Marquez.

  4. This statement was (Not Idiotic) because it stated long live MMA (some) may say. So this article was written by an MMA fan and that’s ok by me. However, I feel the article gave an
unbiased account of what really is going on in boxing at the moment. Actually, when you stop and look at it, the article makes a lot of sense when it says,

“I want to give Floyd Jr. some props. I believe he has set the bar at a level no one else in the sport has even thought of doing, and this is definitely a good thing.”

(How Is THAT IDIOTIC in any way when it is all true???)

“Boxing doesn’t seem willing or capable of cleaning its own house, to separate the honest men from the crooks, to deliver a clean product to its fans.”

(I LOVE THIS PART OF THE ARTICLE….=D)

(HOW IS THIS WRONG IN ANY WAY??? JUST LOOK at what’s happening with Manny Pacquiao at the moment!!!)

*So now you understand what Floyd Jr. is trying to do with regards to fairness in a sport that often is riddled with unfairness and corruption.

    * Just a reminder for people who don’t know yet, but if Floyd Jr. beats Mosley he becomes a 7 yes (7 Time world Champion) which ties Pacquiao’s record. Therefore, setting everything in motion for a fight with the winner of Cotto/Foreman which by the way is a (Championship Match.)

This gives Floyd Jr. an opportunity to become an
(8 Time World Champion) surpassing Manny’s record. Now I believe this will force Pacquiao to take the Blood testing or he will have some very very (angry) Pac Man fans. “You can run but you can’t hide.” famous quote by: Joe Luis about Billy Conn

  5. But it’s asinine because he’s applauding MMA for being just as irresponsible as boxing is with their drug testing.

And all that article does is repeat everything I’ve said in print, and on my podcast.

What’s new in that piece at all?

  6. (My scenario is new), are reading GG? If Manny loses the race to Congress, wow he will be one bored Philipino with a whole lot of pressure from the boxing world.

  7. Why does it matter if Pacquiao wins his race or not? How does that change the boxing landscape?

As for the MMA fan, the article was completely slanted one way and wasn’t well-written. I’m still not so sure what you enjoyed about it.

  8. Because of All the (sense) that it made you know (facts). However, It’s cool when you think about it, and that’s how Bob Arum, Freddie Roach and Pacquiao have no other option but to fight the winner of Mayweather vs Mosley … =D =D =D
They have managed to corner themselves because of blood testing. What Morons.

  9. Bro, I’m not picking on you, but we don’t have any facts. We can all think there might be something going on, but until he tests dirty, we have no evidence. Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds have evidence against them. So does Shane Mosely. Pac doesn’t. That’s how this world works man.

They haven’t corned themselves at all. They have Margarito waiting for them. They don’t need to go Mosley or May.

  10. Ha, trust me, I got a thicker skin than you may think. Look man, you can continue being a pacquiao groupie for all I care it’s just going to make pacquiao losing to Mayweather all the more satisfying for me. You see this is all fun to me. You are funny to me, your constant protection of pacquiao makes me laugh at how naive you can actually be. How old are you man??? Trust

me there is enough reasonable doubt about pacquiao, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. Saying that Freddie & Pac have (Margocheato) waiting for them means absolutely nothing in the boxing world. (Zero) just a money fight for the disgraced and discussed Mexican fans. I’m not picking on you but, (Margocheato) doesn’t have a shred of

creditability in Sports period. where’s your brain??? What counts is creditability, and that’s where Floyd, Mosley and Cotto are in at the moment. You know (Championship Fights) not a misfit show. So in closing, Pacquiao absolutely needs Floyd/Mosley that is if he ever want’s to become eight time world champion and the respect for fighting a creditable opponent. And That’s how the world works my man! XD

  11. Because for whatever reason, you simply don’t understand my points even though I’ve been very consistent with them this entire time, I’ll give them to you again.

You said: “Look man, you can continue being a pacquiao groupie for all I care it’s just going to make pacquiao losing to Mayweather all the more satisfying for me.”

I’m a Mayweather fan. I think Pacquiao is great, but I’m much more of a Mayweather fan than I was ever a Pacquiao fan. If they fight, I’d love to see Mayweather win. How many times have I had to state this to you?

You said: “You are funny to me, your constant protection of pacquiao makes me laugh at how naive you can actually be. How old are you man???”

How do I protect Pacquiao? Because I tell you exactly what’s going to happen? I’m naive? I know the drug culture in this business far more than you. I’ve followed it in pro wrestling for years. If you think Pacquiao is ever going to piss dirty, you’re insane. No one will let him piss dirty. Ever. Thus, in the casual fans’ mindset, he won’t be guilty. Hardcore boxing fans aren’t indicative of what the public thinks. Get out of the boxing bubble for a second.

And what does my age have to do with this? I write articulately, I run this website, you can barely put punctuation in the correct places, and you’re judging me based on what you think my age is? Dude. Come stronger than that bro.

You said: “there is enough reasonable doubt about pacquiao, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out.”

Take that to a court of law without the dirty piss test and see where that gets you.

You said: “Saying that Freddie & Pac have (Margocheato) waiting for them means absolutely nothing in the boxing world. (Zero) just a money fight for the disgraced and discussed Mexican fans. I’m not picking on you but, (Margocheato) doesn’t have a shred of
creditability in Sports period. where’s your brain???”

The point is, they don’t have to fight Mayweather or Mosley. They can retire. They can take different fights. Why does he need to fight them? He’s rich beyond anyone’s belief. He doesn’t have to take any fight. Who’s going to make him? This boxing public you speak of? When has credibility ever mattered in boxing? It’s the filthiest sport in the world. Are you kidding?

You said: “So in closing, Pacquiao absolutely needs Floyd/Mosley that is if he ever want’s to become eight time world champion and the respect for fighting a creditable opponent. And That’s how the world works my man! XD”

You’re bullshitting right? Pacquiao has to fight Mayweather because that’s how the world works? Bro, I don’t know what to say to you there. And the word is credible, not creditable, unless you want to put Pacquiao on layaway.

  12. You are a little less funny to me, but like I said, (Margocheato) will not matter one bit to me and most of the boxing world. I could care less what Pacgwire does I just know that Floyd Jr. has a shot at surpassing Pacquiao. I get your points about Floyd just stop

making Pacquiao out to be clean as the driven snow that’s all. Oh another thing, (credibility) wow I must of been bored on your site but yeah, credibility is everything it’s respect. I’ll tell you one thing, if you were covering sports the way you say I would of

heard of you. I guess you are not so important and maybe that’s why you barley have anyone posting on your site. Something to think about….I only post here because I enjoy educating fanatical Pacquiao fans and speak my mind once in a while. Wow man, you got no flash on this website, got to get some flash my man.

  13. Pacquiao should stick to boxing because from what I’ve read no one want’s to hear him sing anymore….LMAO….don’t quit your day job buddy! =D

  14. Hey David,

I’m a boxing Fan too… Of course i have my own preference fighters in boxing… But if I am to write article about any boxing event… I would do it as a real boxing fan…. and not as a BOXER’s FAN…

In my opinion… Your article is not an article of a Boxing Fan… rather an article of a BOXER’s FAN… and in this instance I can clearly see you are a Mayweather’s Fan…

I suggest if you want to have a good article… learn more on how to be a true BOXING FAN… before you post anything and claim it as a BOXING FAN… or FAN of BOXING article… because you will look ridiculously as an idiot when you do so…

    Cheers!

  15. Obviously too this ‘Elisa Harrison’ does not know anything on how to be a fighter or a boxer…

I don’t think she knows how is it to wake up every morning at 4 AM and go do your work out in preparation for a boxing match…

she just makes herself look exactly an idiot in this article…

  16. Again David, most of the boxing world isn’t who they sell fights to. Hardcore fans like you and I matter, but only to an extent when it comes to big money fights. It’s the general public, the big Vegas spenders, the casual boxing fans that they try to sell big fights to. And Margarito is a tremendous “bad guy” to Pac’s “good guy” as a story. What’s a better story than the most popular boxer in the world facing a guy who wrapped his hands with hardened gauze?

Have I made Pac out to be clean? I’m just stating facts. He hasn’t been caught, he won’t ever get caught, and that’s the end of the story. Just because you assume he’s taking steroids (like many people are), it’s just your opinion. Unless you’re holding his pilly packer when he’s taking his test, you don’t know any more than anyone else.

I don’t do this to make a name. I do this so that my friends and I can write about things we love. Do you see any ads on this site? I don’t have to cater to anyone.

If you want to have smart, respectful discourse, then let’s continue. But if you want to be a jerk, I’ll just stop replying and you can talk to yourself.

  17. @RAMBO_TAN Now your making laugh. I never wrote an article, so read before you open your mouth dog. If you know anything about me which you don’t, you would know I’m a Cotto Fan……..Der……….XD…..XD……XD who looks like the idiot now???? This is what happens when you try to get into an
A and B conversation so C your way out!

GG, I like how you all of a sudden get people to comment on your site…wow….God, your so obvious. Oh, don’t worry I’m sure (margo) is holding Pac’s pilly packer when he’s taking his tests. In fact he probably did that before the fight with Cotto and Clottey. Give me a break, just one big happy family. XD I would LMAO if (margo) and Pacgwire got in the ring. Like they say, one good cheater deserves another. GG, your right, Pac will never be caught that’s nothing new to me.

I’m just interested in what goes on from here for my man Cotto and Mayweather. You know I was pissed off when Cotto beat Mosley then Floyd Jr. beat Hatton and decided to retire. MAN I was besides myself, because I felt Floyd Jr. was Ducking my man Cotto. So lets see what excuses Floyd has when push comes to shove.

(I hope Cotto pulls a Tarver and says any excuses tonight Floyd?) LOL

  18. Bro, like I need back-up to argue with you.

I don’t know Rambo_Tan, but I welcome him, just like I welcomed you.

  19. No man, leave that for the Mexicans. I’m 100% Americano in my heart and 100% Puerto Rican in my Blood.

  20. It wasn’t a diss at your nationality at all. Just at your writing skills. If you want to continue disrespecting the site, then that’s where this conversation goes.

  21. I’m not disrespecting the site….Think By the way, I have many college professors who would HIGHLY disagree with you. You don’t know me dog. Stop it.

  22. As long as you don’t get personal with me I won’t get personal with. However, if you get personal with me, I’m sorry but I got to do it to you and trust me someones feelings will be hurt and it won’t be mine.

  23. Ha! I don’t think people catch feelings on message boards or comments anymore man. And guess what? I can delete everything you write, so it wouldn’t be fair anyway.

Like I said earlier, if you want to talk smart boxing talk, I’m game. But if you just want to fool around and talk smack, I’ll eventually lose interest and you’ll be talking to yourself.

  24. Hahaha… DAVID… your right… my mistake… you did not write it… but you agree with it… so it basically shows where you stand…

Anyway its really hard to argue with a BOXER’s FAN… because no matter what you says… the BOXER’s FAN will always want to see what he wants to see…

And for the record… I think GG expresses himself without any biases more than you…

And stop attacking people’s personality… It just shows your desperate…

There is a saying: “When your enemy becomes desperate. They will attack your personality”.

    Cheers!

  25. It sure sounded like that from my end. Any way, Logical boxing has always been my talk. It’s a shame it isn’t like that with others. I’m not big on taking a whole lot of smack. I say what I mean and mean what I say. Of course if people don’t like it, well that just too dam bad isn’t it.

  26. @Rambo_Tan There is also another saying, stupid is as stupid does. Stop your brown nosing.

  27. look dude…

Im not brown nosing… Im just stating facts… GG did better than you… and that’s a fact…

    🙂

  28. @ R U finshed good, omg sounded like GG was running for congress dam. Too much hype for my taste.

  29. @Rambo_Tan Go on about those weak facts you got so I could tear them apart with my logic.

  30. Hey David…

I actually do boxing as a hobby… I also do street boxing with my friends… anyone who knows how to throw a punch is welcome to join…

I would like to invite you for a spar… Reply back if you are interested…

    🙂

  31. Just give me your address… I can go to your town… and we can make it in your street of choice or any back alley you prefer…

    Seriously dude… i’m serious here…. reply back ok…

    🙂

  32. Really would since there are very few 6’6 220pound fighters out there to compete with. The problem is your talking to a corrections officer so yeah not a good idea to go that route with me.

  33. That’s great…

I welcome any challenge… just be a good sport… you would not refuse a good fight wouldn’t you?

    Mano a Mano…. you and me….

    When and Where?

  34. Eyyy nothing personal dude…

We do it just for fun… don’t tell me you gonna chicken out on this… its gonna be fun dude… we have done it many times on different places…

The fight will just last for 20 minutes… the once with most damage losses…

    What do you say?

  35. I would never give you any upper hand on me. Ever! You want to find me? I’ll be in Gleasons gym in Brooklyn N.Y.C. Friday after my shift 7:00pm I’ll be waiting.

  36. That’s going to be interesting. I wonder what they draw. I think it’s an HBO fight and not PPV, which is good in my opinion.

  37. That’s great…

    See you soon buddy…

    🙂

Would you like olympic style drug testing too?

    🙂

    Just kidding….

  38. Hi, GG, how are you? It was a pleasant surprise to see my article about “Test-o-Phobic” Pacquiao in your fine blog. However, I think I need to set the record straight on some of the idiotic comments left here by… who else? Pacquiao fanatical fans. (Pun intended).
1st and foremost, and I really laughed at this… I don’t know the first thing about MMA, let alone be a fan. I made the statement because I have read several times that MMA is taking over where boxing is slacking. I did say “some may say.”
I honestly have to wonder if these people have a life? Or is Pacquiao the only entertainment that has ever come around them? Because some of the points they try to make are so pathetic, they don’t even deserve the attention they are obviously getting.
For the lame brained fanatic who implies Margarito and Pacquiao could be fighting soon, I want to point out a small little detail. Margarito has NOT been licensed anywhere in the United States yet, not even in the lax state of Texas. So, unless they go out of the United States, don’t get too enthused about that yet.
If telling it like it is makes me a fan of Mayweather, so be it. I just wish that whichever fighter we follow, we follow him in an objective manner, something the Pacquiao fans seem totally incapable and unwilling of doing.
There is a nice video that discusses the Racism being displayed by some Pacquiao fans, and how that’s turning off the boxing world against them and Pacquiao as well. You can find the link to it in my FB page.
I want to thank you for your support and let’s stay in touch.
    God bless America!

  39. I would be the lame-brained fan who made the Margarito comment, but then again, I called one of your points “idiotic”, so I guess we’re even! Ha!

My point about Margarito is that he’s an Arum guy as is Pacquiao. And like you said, Texas is a lax state and that’s where I’d imagine they’d fight. Did I say it was a done deal? Of course not. I just think they would like it to be a back-up plan.

Pacquiao’s fan base is going to be here as long as he’s hot. I think many of them are smart fans, but of course, there are a lot of non-boxing fans that come with that and they simply like him because he’s one of them and because he’s a star. But we always have to deal with that when there are popular fighters.

For those of us who write about the sport, we should try to cover it as objectively as possible, but it’s not always necessary. We can have favorites. I like watching Pacquiao, but I wouldn’t say I’m a huge Pacquiao guy. I like Floyd. I grew up watching Larry Holmes (who I interviewed and the audio should be up here soon) and Tyson. I loved De La Hoya. So we can still have our favorites and not think that we have to cover everything down the middle. We’re not employed to do so.

Thanks for commenting though! I appreciate it!

    GG

  40. To: Elisa Harrison

    Just one line:

You are obviously more into Mayweather… Period!

  41. By the way here is another stupid Idea from me:

Hey! Mayweather used to fight at 106 lbs…

And until now he goes up to welterweight and still beating all those great fighters(If they are great fighters or cherry picked).

And to prove to you he has a record of 40-0. 5 world title….

I think he is juiced… You cannot move all to all those weight levels and still win… definitely man… He’s juiced… It must be something like the A-Side Meth… That they used in Africa… 500 years ago… when the Lions used to chase them… but cannot bit their ass off… The Lions teeth kept bouncing off their assess….

he must be juiced… yeah… He is juiced…
