UFC 109 Preview – Randy Couture Vs. Mark Coleman

After UFC 108 saw one of the lower UFC buyrates of recent memory, UFC comes back with Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman in the main event. Because of Couture, this show won’t do as badly as 108, but it’s only because of Couture. The show has some very interesting fights but not too much that is must see.

There’s some of us on the FGB crew who aren’t really looking forward to this show, but others who are at least intrigued. Stevie J from Angrymarks.com joins us.

Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg

Duan: Trigg by decision
Alan: Trigg by decision
Big D: Serra by 1st round TKO
Stevie J: Serra by decision
Cactus Jim: Serry by 2nd round submission
GG: Serra by 3rd round TKO

Duan says:

Both of these guys are just lost in the shuffle at welterweight. Trigg to ride out a convincing but uneventful three round decision.

Alan says:

I’ll be hoping for a Serra KO but much like Duan I see a Trigg decision. More bore in store.

Big D says:

Too bad this wasn’t built up more – I really wanted to see the promos here. Anyways, Trigg’s best days are behind him sadly. I think Matt “The Terra” Serra puts him away quickly and wins one for the Gracie click. I love both these men though…

Stevie J says:

Without looking at the odds I’d suspect this one is almost a push – I can’t see either guy being more than 100 over or under. Serra has done more in recent years, but he has also been inactive a lot. Trigg looked really bad against Koscheck, but looked so bad so fast that it almost bears no impact on where he’s actually at in 2010. I’m going to flip the AngryMarks coin… watch it twirl… IT’S STILL TWIRLING… and it came up Matt Serra by unanimous decision.

Cactus Jim says:

Trigg’s sub defense sucks balls. Serra will probably stand for a round and then take it down and finish it. Trigg should stick with announcing.

GG says:

If I look at their last fight each, Matt Serra fought a stalemate with Matt Hughes and lost a decision. Trigg was knocked out by Josh Koscheck. Was Trigg’s opponent the better fighter right? Probably so. I just see Serra as someone who enjoys his role in the UFC, while I’m not so sure what is keeping Trigg around. I think the fight will probably be close for the first two rounds, but I like Serra’s fire more than I like Trigg’s.

Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen

Duan: Marquardt by 1st round TKO
Alan: Marquardt by 2nd round TKO
Big D: Marquardt by 2nd round submission
Stevie J: Marquardt by 2nd round TKO
Cactus Jim: Marquardt by 2nd round submission
GG: Marquardt by 3rd round TKO

Duan says:

Marquardt is a real top quality middleweight, and I’m just not convinced Sonnen is at that level. I expect the gulf in class to be visible right from the very beginning. Marquardt overwhelms him.

Alan says:

Now we’re talking. Very interested in this. I’ve been very impressed with both recently. But, AGAIN, like Duan said… I think Nate be a bit too much for Sonnen.

Big D says:

Sonnen has not impressed me lately. Marquardt on the contrary, has gotten better. Nate the Great wins.

Stevie J says:

Let me see – do I really need to think about this for more than 30 seconds – #%#^ NO! Marquardt by first round TKO – in all likelihood in the first 90 seconds.

Cactus Jim says:

Nate the Great by submission in the second. I’d like to see him fight Anderson Silva again.

GG says:

I think Sonnen is vastly improved and has figured out how to get fights where he wants them. I think he’ll frustrate Marquardt early on, but by the second round, it should be all Marquardt. I think he finishes him in the third.

Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman

Duan: Couture by 2nd round TKO
Alan: Couture by decision
Big D: Couture by decision
Stevie J: Couture by decision
Cactus Jim: Couture by 3rd round TKO
GG: Couture by 3rd round TKO

Duan says:

This match up does nothing for me, and it’s probably going to be a painfully dull fight. Couture is the fresher of the two, and should have enough to take this with relative ease.

Alan says:

Don’t wanna see it…. probably won’t watch it…… don’t care who wins. But it will be Couture, by decision. Smarter fighter.

Big D says:

While this match is being advertised as an epic match between two legends in the sport, it will probably be a boring lay-n-pray esque battle with two over-the-hill wrestlers. Even though the level of wrestling here is top notch, but that doesn’t neccessarily mean it’ll be an entertaining fight. It’s really a name-value battle at best. I take Couture.

Stevie J says:

This fight should have happened a dozen years ago, but I say better late than never, on top of which it’s arguable that Couture is a better fighter now than he was then. On top of that, Coleman has looked surprisingly good for his age and condition. Even with no cardio at all he nearly beat Shogun, and although Bonnar should have been younger, stronger and faster he got dominated. Couture tends to win the close fights so I’m going to go with a decision fight, but I’ll give a 1 in 10 chance that Couture actually KO’s Coleman for the win.

Cactus Jim says:

I think Coleman gasses by the 3rd and Randy gets him by TKO from the clinch. Most likely a boring match. In fact, my expectations are so low, that if there is anything remotely entertaining about the match I’ll be ecstatic.

GG says:

The problem here is that Coleman just doesn’t have the engine that Couture does. It’s kind of funny that when this fight was supposed to happen, both guys were much bigger. Aren’t you supposed to gain weight when you get older? I think Coleman gasses by the third round and Couture will knock him out. It could be scary if it gets that far.

We’ll be back with delayed play by play tomorrow night as I have plans in the evening. But it’ll still get done.
