TNA Genesis PPV (2010) Play By Play – Kurt Angle Vs. AJ Styles Plus Hulk Hogan

Yep, I decided to get this show. It might be four years since I’ve seen an actual TNA PPV live, but hey, I’m caught up in the buzz too. I’m intrigued, but I know that more than likely, I’ll be disappointed in the end. But at least we’re going to get a good main event.

Big D will chime in with his thoughts from time to time.

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are in the ring to do a promo. There’s now a ramp and there’s no more 6-sided ring. Of course, on queue, the fans start chanting that they want six sides. Hogan says in a 4-sided ring is where professional wrestling is done. He said it’s where they shed their blood, sets, and tears. I think me meant sweat.

He called out Vince McMahon with his “Whatcha gonna do!” line and then called him “brother! or sister” at the end.

1. Amazing Red vs. Brian Kendrick

Kendrick’s the mystery guy, but we told you that last night on FGB Radio. Kendrick looks like he’s in his heel “The Brian Kendrick” character. No Don West with Red.

There’s a very large woman in a purple dress sitting ringside who looks like Brooke Hogan.

It was a pretty good back and forth match. Kendrick is much larger than Red and the story was almost like the champ was the underdog. I think most expected Kendrick to take the title. Kendrick slowed the match down as he and Red were off with the timing a bit. Red finished him with the Code Red, which is a cool little move. Very solid opener.

Hot opener. Surprised Red won, but Kendrick looked good. They must like Red. Bisch likes young guys.

Winner: Amazing Red

Sean Waltman beat Scott Hall in rock, paper, scissors to be Nash’s tag team partner after Bischoff and Hogan told them that they don’t have a contract and have to prove themselves. Why Hall would agree since he’s in the same boat as Waltman, the world will never know.

2. Sean Morley vs. Christopher Daniels

Daniels cut a great promo to try and turn heel including telling Brooke to sit down and shut up.

I’m not a Morley guy. I’ve always felt him to be way too bland of a wrestler. But I love Daniels. Daniels pulled off a sick submission which Mike Tenay identified as the Koji Clutch first used by Koji Kanemoto. Tazz said it was almost a Koji Clutch, but I think he was confused with Joe’s Kokina Clutch.

Daniels was on the top with Morley and missed a hurrancanrana and Morley hit what they called the “Money Shot” to win the match. Morley had a hard time with his footing on the top rope. Another good match.

Winner: Sean Morley

3. Tara vs. ODB

Why is this a two out of three falls match?

Tara won the first fall with a small package.

It looks like Brooke is going to be doing something here. She tried to pick up Tara, who was outside, and ODB scared her. Joey Fatone is also in the front row. I like calling him Joey Fat One.

Tara hit the Widow’s Peak for the second straight fall and the win. It was a pretty slow and dull match. Nothing wrong with it in particular, but there wasn’t much to it.

4. Hernandez & Matt Morgan vs. The British Invasion

This is going to be a squash match right?

There was a Nick Hogan sighting.

Well, it wasn’t a squash match, but it was entertaining. Morgan looked like a star, but I just don’t like Hernandez all that much. I loved the old school heel tag team stuff from the British Invasion. Near the end of the match, there was a ton of double teaming going on and the referee didn’t care. Morgan wins with the big boot of death.

Really fun old school tag action. We predicted it on FGB. I hope the Invasion dont get fired though.

Winner: Hernandez & Matt Morgan

Lashley tried to go into Bischoff’s office and Abyss attacked him and knocked him out with a, um, flat screen computer monitor. Hogan came in and told Abyss to take the hardcore stuff and keep it in the locker room and get ready for his match with an unnamed opponent.

5. Desmond Wolfe vs. The Pope

Wolfe came out with a fetching brunette who looked like Posh Spice. Big D thought she looked like a young Steph McMahon.

The match started off slowly as they set the tone with Wolfe working on Pope’s left knee. He put him in all kinds of sick submission moves. It was a bit boring, but definitely played out in the end. Pope looked good and played out the bad wheel so every time he tried to do a move, he sold his knee. He had Wolfe in some near falls near the end and went for his double knees finisher but Wolfe hit the lariat out of nowhere for the pin. Best match so far.

Awesome Awesome performance. Both guys looked good. Nigel can get a shot now at the title.

Winner: Desmond Wolfe

Bischoff fired Jeremy Borash until further notice. Christy interviewed the Nature Boy who simply said that he goes where the talent goes. Wooo!

6. The Band vs. Beer Money

Waltman as 6-Pac replaces Scott Hall in this match and for the better. Hall looked about 60 years old early on.

This was a weird match. It had absolutely no heat. And it had Kevin Nash. The other three guys worked hard and Nash definitely worked harder than he has probably in years. Beer Money looked good and so did 6-Pac. He even hit the Bronco Buster.

Hall came out and pulled a fan out of the crowd which allowed Beer Money hit the Last Call Super Kick on Nash for the win. I wouldn’t call the match good, but it wasn’t bad. If the camera man caught the finish, it would’ve been better.

I’m not sure where they are going, but at least Beer Money won.

Also, Tazz said X-Pac at least three or four times.

Winner: Beer Money

7. Abyss vs. Ken Anderson

Well, there’s your surprise guest. He did the whole Mr. Anderson gimmick. The crowd seemed to enjoy it.

The less said about Mr. Anderson, the better. He hit Abyss with the brass knucks to win the match. Bleh.

OKAY so… Abyss can take tacks, fire, chairs, ladders, tables, and barbed wire, but KNUCKS knock him out?

Winner: Ken Anderson

8. Kurt Angle vs. AJ Styles

Big D thinks this match goes 40 minutes. Jeez I hope not.

Well, it’s hard to recap a near 30 minute match, but I’ll say that it was good, though not great.

The match started out really slow. Lots of mat stuff, but it was really good. They paced it well because they were going to save the big moves for the last fifteen minutes.

The best thing was Kurt hitting the Styles Clash. It was hilarious. Kurt pulled the straps down and went for the “Now I mean business” ankle lock. He then grapevined the leg and AJ was about to tap. Ric Flair had come out earlier and pulled the referee out of ring right as AJ tapped. He then gave AJ the belt and told him to hit Kurt. AJ then hit Kurt and pinned him.

They then strutted around the ring and AJ said it was Ric Flair and AJ Styles. I remember the first heel turn for AJ didn’t go so well. We’ll see what happens.

All those big moves don’t do it but a belt shot still does in 2010. Surprising, but not unexpected. AJ doing the strut is pretty awesome.
