Nigel McGuinness signs with TNA and NOT WWE
Jason Powell reported earlier today that former ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness, rather than sign with World Wrestling Entertainment as it was thought, instead has opted to sign with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and will be debuting (technically re-debuting since he’s worked a few shots there before) tonight at the Impact tapings.
You’re probably wondering “what the hell?” I can shed some light into this.
This is incredibly shocking news to me and all of my fellow wrestling fans. About a month ago, Nigel agreed in principle to join WWE. His last independent match was at the end of September and both he and Bryan Danielson were scheduled to report to Stamford for entrance interviews. The process of officially signing with WWE is not instant, as neither athlete had their name on the dotted line (which caused a lot of confusion among fans not in the know).
When an athlete is signed by World Wrestling Entertainment, they are to complete a background check, a drug and wellness initial screening, as well as take care of any pertinent Work Visa issues if they are international talent. A talent is NOT officially contractually bound to World Wrestling Entertainment until all of the pre-signing policies have been fully completed.
We can only speculate as to what happened. I am uncertain as to why exactly Nigel had a change of heart, but it’s best NOT to speculate that he failed the initial wellness test or anything. Did TNA offer him more money? Perhaps Nigel preferred to work in Orlando near Largo, FL, where he currently lives. We are unsure, but I promise you that we will keep you posted.
All that we know is Nigel IS backstage at the tapings and is set to debut tonight. Stay tuned to FGB!
P.S. Powell also states Bryan Danielson may also sign with TNA.
Update 4:18PM from Dave Meltzer on the Observer Message Board: Don’t criticize WWE for this. Hopefully I can write the story in detail by tomorrow but all the key elements are still off the record. Suffice to say it’s very different than being reported. Bryan not part of this deal. Also, there will be plenty more at TV tonight.

So basically without going into too much detail on things that can’t be reported what do you think based on Meltzer’s comments? Sounds like Meltzer has to be cryptic until getting the okay and that WWE didn’t screw up like people think, nor did TNA steal him out from under WWE. I just find it strange that Nigel would agree to a deal and back out just like that over WWE taking long to send a contract or whatever. Sounds like TNA people are trying to spin this in their favor.
Like Big D said, both Danielson and McGuinness only agreed with WWE IN PRINCIPLE. Nothing more, nothing less.
hmmm This all sounds very suspicious.
I can’t fathom any reason to sign with TNA at the moment, if the WWE offer was still definitely available. Something serious must have happened.
The more I hear about this the more it sounds like WWE passed on signing him for whatever reason. Obviously, Meltzer will report it when the time is right.
Besides whatever discouraged WWE, I also think WWE has stopped caring about ROH and that’s why talk of this “raid” has died down, which gave more incentive for WWE to pull their offer to Nigel. Seems to me WWE overestimated the power of ROH on television.
