Linares Upset

New Goldenboy signing Jorge Linares last night faced what seemed like a rather routine defense of his WBA super featherweight crown against unheralded Mexican Juan Carlos Salgado. Salgado was unbeaten in 21 fights, but had been matched up relatively soft for the most part. Beating Linares seemed like a huge ask of him to say the least.

Venezuelan born Linares has fought most of his career out of Japan, but there has been a long term interest in showcasing him in America. He signed a co promotional agreement with Goldenboy back in September, who were set to work along side his original promoter Teiken Boxing. The idea was that once he got past Salgado, they could then start to introduce him to the American audience. They definitely had big plans lined up for Linares, but strange things can happen in world title fights.
