WWE 2009 The Bash Play By Play
This show used to be called “The Great American Bash”, but is now simply called “The Bash”. It’s also now in June rather than in July. Like the past few months of shows, there’s no real money match on the show, but it should be an entertaining evening because of good wrestling matches.
It looks like the ECW Championship scramble match is first.
1. ECW Championship Scramble
Christian and Jack Swagger are in first. It was a very slow first three minutes with Swagger working him over.
Finlay came out next and the match picked up. Swagger rolled Finlay up and is now the current ECW champion.
Dreamer came in and this match is pretty much a cluster. Finlay hit his finisher on Swagger and is now the current champ. Usually 4 way matches like this work because they can work out some fun multiple man spots. But these guys are off tonight. Working hard, but off.
I had no clue that Mark Henry was in the match. He’s the fifth guy. They did a stack superplex with Dreamer getting suplexed on. Best spot of the match. Henry powerslammed Dreamer and won the fall. He’s the current champ with about 4 1/2 minutes left.
Finlay jumped though the top and middle rope and out to the floor. Dreamer did his somersault from the apron. Christian jumped from the second rope to the floor. Then Mark Henry threatened jumping out to the floor, but Swagger saved him by undercutting him and then Vader Bombing him and pinning him.
Henry put Swagger in the 619 position, but jumped on the back of his head and through the ropes and to the floor.
Christian hit the Unprettier on Swagger, but Dreamer broke up the pin and pinned him with the DDT. There’s a little over a minute left in the match.
Dreamer snuck out of the match as the champ. Everyone tried to pin him at the end, but failed. Dreamer is still (or once again) the ECW champ. They tried to be innovative and worked hard, but the match just didn’t completely work. It had some fun spots, but overall, was just ok.
Winner: Tommy Dreamer
Edge wanted in the title match, but Teddy Long said no.
2. Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho – Title For Mask
It took a few minutes to get started, but get started it did. Mysterio gave Jericho the flying crotch drop from the top rope out to the floor. Mysterio nearly jumped too far almost cleared Jericho. He fell awkwardly. Mysterio then came back into the ring with a double springboard flipped into a splash. Mysterio went for hurricanrana from the top rope but Jericho turned it into a power bomb from the top. Mysterio springboarded from the middle rope, but Jericho caught him and hit the code breaker.
Mysterio hit the 619, but the springboard splash got turned into the Walls. Jericho grabbed Mysterio’s mask, but Mysterio had another one on underneath. He finally hit the 619 and splash and won the match. It was yet another great match between the two. These guys can work together forever for all I care.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
The IC strap is back around his waist.
3. Dolph Ziggler vs. The Great Khali
I guess the reason this was on the show was because Kane returned. He came out and started slamming Khali with chair shots and Ziggler won the match. I guess it was a no DQ because Khali took chair shots from both Ziggler and Kane.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Vince McMahon came out to tell Teddy Long that he was still under probation, and even made fun of his dance.
I guess there’s no such thing as Priceless anymore.
Teddy Long came out to add a team to the match. For some reason, Edge and Jericho are now part of the match.
4. The Colons vs. Legacy vs. Edge and Chris Jericho
The entire match was based on the Colons and Legacy keeping Edge and Jericho out of the match. In a sense, they had to work together to keep it between them. It was intriguing because Edge was impatient, but Jericho was just waiting for the other two teams to beat each other up.
The match was solid between Legacy and the Colons with Legacy getting the heat on Primo. He made the hot tag to Carlito and he did some sloppy stuff until Edge tagged himself in the match and speared Carlito, who hit the back stabber on Cody and was trying for the pin. Edge and Jericho are the new champs.
Winner: Edge and Chris Jericho
5. Melina vs. Michelle McCool
The match was based around McCool working on Melina’s left leg. It was a pretty decent match. McCool was the aggressor almost the entire match and had the upper hand. Melina had a short burst of offense, and then was hit with the Styles Clash and pinned. McCool is the new WWE Women’s champ.
Winner: Michelle McCool
6. CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy
We got Dusty finished. It was a pretty fun match, especially near the end. Hardy took much of the match. Near the end, Hardy hit the swanton and got the pin, but Punk’s foot was under the ropes. His music played, but the ref called it off and restarted the match.
Punk went for the GTS, but Hardy hit him in the eye. I think he was gold bricking. Punk went back into the corner and the referee made Hardy stay away from him until Punk was ready. He kept covering his eye. He then threw a kick and hit the ref in the back and was DQd. Hardy went after them and they had a pull apart.
The slow heel turn is still working.
Winner: Jeff Hardy
7. The Miz vs. John Cena
Well, so much for pushing Miz. Cena pretty much handled him and Miz tapped to the STF very quickly. I can’t imagine they go anywhere from here. That program has to be over.
Winner: John Cena
8. Randy Orton vs. HHH
The first match is a regular match. There’s something about these guys that just doesn’t click for me anymore. Even when they work smart matches, I just have a hard time having fun watching their matches.
HHH got DQ’d for the first fall on purpose. He hit Orton with a chair and then just kept hitting him with it.
The second fall is Falls Count Anywhere. Since Orton was done, HHH pedigreed him on the floor outside and immediately pinned him.
The third fall is a stretcher match. The last fall was good. Both guys played that they were hurt from the first two falls, which didn’t really make a ton of sense considering they were short falls. But they worked hard and made it pretty dramatic. HHH was about to win after hitting Orton with the pedigree on the stage. Rhodes came out and stopped him. Then DiBiase came out and did the same. Orton then pulled out a piece of the stage to hit HHH and then push him over the stretcher line.
HHH hit him with the sledge hammer to end the show. He had done so to Rhodes and DiBiase before losing the match so he was the sole survivor, even though he lost the match.
Winner: Randy Orton
