WEC 39 – Leonard Garcia vs. Mike Brown Play By Play

Jens Pulver replaces Frank Mir on this show and joins Todd Harris.

Razor Rob McCullough opens the show against Marcus Hicks.

1. Marcus Hicks vs. Rob McCullough

They did absolutely nothing in the first round, but the second round was good. Hicks went for a guillotine and ended up on the bottom of some punches. McCullough was all over him with kicks, knees, and punches, and Hicks was just trying to survive. McCullough ended up with a cut on the side of his eye, but it was his round all the way.

To show how boring this third round has been, the referee threatened to stop the fight and call it a no contest if they didn’t pick it up. Terrible third round. I guess you have to give it to McCullough because of the second round.

Winner: Rob McCullough by way of majority decision.

The crowd hated it and it sounds like the judges did too.

2. Chris Mickle vs. Jose Aldo

Mickle’s stand-up is weird. He’s right handed, but he throws punches off the wrong foot and he’s lunging. Aldo threw a knee that caught Mickle on the chin and then Aldo just threw about 10 punches in a row and the referee stopped it.

Aldo wanted to go climb the fence and possibly run into the crowd, but he stopped himself sheepishly.

Winner: Jose Aldo by way of 1st round TKO

3. Marcos Galvao vs. Damacio Page

Page came out throwing a wild overhand right hand. Galvao tried to clinch, but he couldn’t stop Page’s right hand. I don’t even think Galvao threw a punch. Page knocked him down with a right and finished him on the ground.

Winner: Damacio Page by way of 1st round TKO

4. Ricardo Lamas vs. Bart Palaszewski

Let’s just call him Bart. No mention if Ricardo is kin to Lorenzo.

Lamas kept Bart on his back for nearly the entire round. He was scoring with right hands, but Bart never seemed to be in trouble. Bart tried for a triangle and kimura, but never got close to either. Lamas controlled him and won the round.

Second round was very much like the first. Lamas controlled him and had him on his butt near the end of the round. He was waiting to use the knee, but Bart was still not on his feet. Bart has a mouse under his eye from some of the shots.

Nothing much to the third round. Interesting fight, but not necessarily all that entertaining. Lamas continued to control him and he’s going to win this one.

Winner: Ricardo Lamas by way of unanimous decision

5. Leonard Garcia vs. Mike Brown

Pulver says, “Aw dang!”

Brown knocked him down with a big right hand and tried to stop him on the ground. Garcia turned over and Brown tried to get in a rear naked choke. Garcia is busted open. Brown sunk in an arm triangle and Garcia tapped. That was pretty explosive.

Winner: Mike Brown by way of 1st round TKO

Garcia threw a lazy left loopy left hook which was the space Brown needed to throw the right hand. This should set up Brown and Urijah Faber in a rematch.

Not one of the better WEC shows I’ve seen. Other than the main event, nothing was really special. Aldo won big, but he was facing someone who didn’t seem to be in his league.
