SummerSlam 2008 – The Aftermath

We had coverage of last night’s WWE SummerSlam show. A few of our writers gave their thoughts about the show.

Best Match: John Cena vs. Batista
Worst Match: Matt Hardy vs. Mark Henry

I know, I know. I’m supposed to say that the Hell In A Cell match between the Undertaker and Edge was the best match of the night. I thought it was well done and very good. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I had more fun watching the slobber knocker that was Cena/Batista I. It was hard hitting and fast paced and I loved the huge power spots. If not for the terrible submissions, I would’ve loved it even more. I think what ruined Edge/Undertaker for me were the chair shots to the face and head. I know they are doing them a lot safer now, but I still get an odd feeling when I see someone getting a chair shot to anywhere above the back.

And what can you say about the Chris Jericho/Shawn Michaels confrontation? It was perfect. I wasn’t a fan of Jericho hitting Shawn’s wife, even accidentally, and to me, it showed a small weakness in Shawn that I hope Jericho calls out. Shawn ducked so that he didn’t have to take a blow. His wife took it for him.

CM Punk vs. JBL wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but I didn’t like it as much as some did. I was slightly disappointed in the Jeff Hardy vs. MVP match as I thought they could’ve done way more. In hindsight, there were just as many disappointing or bad matches as there were good, but the last two matches catapulted the show in my book. Good show overall.

Worst Match: Matt Hardy vs. Mark Henry

I thought this was a great show, and certainly one of the best pay per views WWE has put on this year. I expected all three world title matches to suck. Khali vs. Triple H and JBL vs. CM Punk were as good as you could have possibly expected them to be. Far from classics, but very watchable none the less. I had absolutely zero interest in Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy, so I didn’t care much that it ended up being a complete debacle.

Cena vs. Batista was really good with the exception of a couple of horrible submission holds. Really cool finish, but I was a little bit surprised that Batista was put over so strong. Hell In A Cell was awesome for what it was. Some really cool spots and both guys worked really hard. It provided a very conclusive end to the Edge/Undertaker feud. It will be interesting to see what they do with Edge now, as it ended up being one of the most decisive beatings I have seen in a WWE main event in some time.

Everything Duan said is correct. Edge/Taker is not only the best match of the year but the best Hell In A Cell match of all time, slightly edging out the Taker matches with Foley and Michaels. Edge is without a doubt a master of his craft and nobody knows how to do an epic back and forth main event like the Undertaker, which is ironic considering the first like, 6 years of his career in the WWF consisted of his killing guys one-sidedly.

The title matches were about as good as expected considering the workers in there and Cena/Batista was easily the second best match on the card. They need a super hot angle to sell the rematch and if they do it right – many buys. Speaking of buys – the Shawn Michaels / Chris Jericho angle with Jericho hitting Shawn’s wife in the face is worth three hundred thousand buys on its own. One of the few “oh shit, what the fuck” moments of the night with the rest being in the two main events.

Overall, best PPV of the year so far… and I went to MANIA!

Really really great show. My favourite match was Cena/Dave. It was way better than I thought possible in spite of the shitty submissions Duan noted (somewhere in Japan a single tear rolled down Yuki Ishikawa’s eye during Dave’s “rear naked choke”). HIAC was quite good although I wasn’t into it as much as most. I did think the finish was cool as all heck though.

Punk/JBL was excellent. They brought the stiffness and hate so a good time was had by all.

Santino and Beth, sorry … GLAMARELLA were hilarious in their match.
