FGB Radio – UFC On Fox, Pacquiao/Marquez III, And Joe Frazier

On the latest edition of FGB Radio, not only is Jason, aka @dadrrtywhyteboi on the show to talk about UFC on Fox and UFC 138, but our old friend Tim Starks from The Queensberry Rules is on the show as well to talk about Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez III.

Tim (@tqbr on Twitter) and I discuss the big fight this weekend, including who won the first two fights, who wins this weekend, and why Marquez wants it so badly. We also discuss the great Joe Frazier.

Jason then joins me and we talk about the huge UFC On Fox main event between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos and give our thoughts on who wins and why. We also discuss Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson and a little bit about UFC 138. I also read a brilliant few paragraphs by Robert Lashley on Joe Frazier.

Check it out and let us know what you think.

  1. Great job lads.

Just a couple things to add on just how hard a night’s work this is for Marquez.

He couldn’t get the judges approval in two super tight fights already. That was before Manny Pacquiao meant 70 million dollar PPVs. That was before Pacquiao became a darling not just at home, but to the entire sporting world. And whether it’s true or not, this will be viewed as the final hurdle to overcome before Mayweather/Pacquiao talks can get serious again. Manny Pacquiao is big business. The benefit of any doubt will fall in his favour. That’s not to say Marquez can’t win a decision, but he probably will need to put it beyond debate to do it.

As for the chances of him dropping or stopping Pacquiao? I want everybody to go back and watch the 6th round of their first fight. It’s on youtube, go! Look at the shot Marquez lands a minute ten in to the round. If that didn’t topple small Pacquiao, I’m not convinced anything Marquez throws can put a dent in the much more physically robust welterweight version. This is a guy who lay against the ropes and took shots from Miguel Cotto. I just don’t see it happening.

    So yeah….an uphill battle.

  2. When we re-watching the first fight, I think I mentioned that big shot and how I couldn’t believe he didn’t put Pacquiao down with it. And now, it’s 7 years later.

He’s not going to win a slugfest and he’s more than likely not going to win a decision (I mean, if he can’t win a decision in the second fight when he fought nearly the perfect fight …) he’s going to need something special to happen. What I think is going to be very interesting is his strategy. He thinks he has Pac’s number. What’s left for him to do?

  3. Well, I could tell you what he needs to do, in the sense that I can point to certain things and say this is what’s required from Marquez, In fact you can limit it to 3 requirements. I just have my doubts he will be capable of acting on them.

    1. Start fast. He can be slow out the blocks and if he is here, I don’t see him making it out of the first 3 rounds.

    2. Don’t touch down. He can’t lose discipline and get dragged into a shootout. Even ignoring what we said about him not being let off the hook on a knockdown this time, the 10-8 will kill him. Marquez can’t concede a knockdown and win this fight.

    3. Timing is again key. In both of the other fights, once he sussed his timing out everything else fell into place. Pacquiao still likes to slide in and out of range and get his shots off, so in theory, it should still be possible to time his movements. Whether Marquez is quick enough to get his counters off now, I don’t know.

If he doesn’t give away the early rounds, doesn’t hit the canvas, and gets his timing sorted quickly; there’s nothing more you can ask of him really.
